TY 80 info..Resto now started.

Postby restoremaz » Mon Jul 09, 2012 10:19 pm

Hi guys. i havent been on in a while, but ive recently found this TY80 and have been stuck into it.

Im trying to work out if they have the same tank design as the 250, or if its just a straight line with yellow and white.

This bike was aparently the first TY80 brought into the country acording to the original owner i purchased it from. he claims he was sponsored by yamaha in the 70s...this particular bike had a side car fitted. He also says it was featured in 1970s bike magazines...i dont know how true any of this is...he said he will scan some of the pages and send to me.

It is missing the part that joins from the air box to the carby..wich i would love to buy if anyone has one they would like to sell.also the end part of the muffler tip.

Ive removed all the mounts and am doing my best to make it all original. he also changed the colour...luckily i have some yellow left i got matched up for my TY250 resto a few years ago.

I have purchased new steering head bearings, a new front gaurd, fork seals, ive sent a lot of the bolts away to get re zinc coated and am curently working on smoothing out all the welded areas the side car brackets were on.

This is my old TY 250 i built a few years ago.

If it's the first model TY80, it should be the same colours and pattern as the TY250A. Colours are Tober Pearl and that same yellow as the TY250B
Do an internet search and you will soon find brochure photos of the TY80A

BUT WHY WOULD YOU EVEN THINK OF REPAINTING IT !!!!!!!!!

All the best TY80s are painted that colour.

Here is ours... two weekends ago it was ridden by Bailey Boniface to 1st place in Junior Class at the NSW Twinshock Titles.

This identical twin brother thing is getting really spooky !!!!!!!!!

I like to do my bikes original...your one looks good, any spare parts you want to sell? mines missing one shock and the part that joins the air box to the carby...

Stayed back tonight and got some more work done on the frame. Started smoothing out all the parts where the side car brackets were. man i wish they never did that to this poor little bike.

Not sure why they bashed in and folded this part of the frame, but ive got it back into shape and welded up the splits..

Bit more smoothing to do after it comes back from the sand blaster

Other sections that were ruined by the side car brackets, cut off, welded up the faults and ground down.

One of the pins that holds the rubber mount for the side cover was cut off too....i smoothed down a bolt and welded it in place....

I will smooth out all these parts in more detail when it gets back from the sand blasters.

I also have this 1978 yamaha RX125...i got this bike in bits plus another parts bike and made one out of the two.

I got it registered a week or two ago and am just ironing out some carby bugs...

I will rip this apart and restore it after the TY80.

Someone might have an original brochure and scan it for you. Those photos are the same size as on the website I mentioned
