Date: Mon, 31 May 1999 16:44:48 EDT Subject: Beta Parts at Radio Shack!! Have I got your attention? I went riding yesterday on my '95 Beta Techno, just my typical 30 minute afternoon ride. My bike started boiling over! The cap was loose, not big deal "it happens!" Then I noticed the real PROBLEM! My fan wasn't turning! Oh, no! I didn't want to put $150.00 into a bike I plan on selling at the end of the year! Since my riding area is just a few hundred feet from my house, I head back home. Short the thermostat terminals together, no luck! Shut it down and hope for the best, a broken wire. Well, to make a short story long, there's a little black cube with a capacitor wired to the fan motor. It's a full wave bridge rectifier. Or it converts AC signal from the engine mag. to a DC signal used by the fan motor and lights (if you have them). The wires going to the rectifier were charred and so was the rectifier! Also noticed how poorly it was wired and soldered together! I've worked in the electronic field for 30 years so, stuff like that bug me. To my suprise my local Radio Shack had this part, the exact part down to the same part number! KBL02 at $1.43, I buy a new filter capacitor also ($1.25). Wire it all up with quick disconnect terminals, install the unit and of course the fan works again. Grin, grin.!!! I don't know what shorted the rectifier out, but think it was water or just faulty insulation around the sloppy solder job. Maybe others have had this problem, but if not I hope it helps. What about you Chris? mick |
