Subject: Exhaust this one From: sspake "at" uk.xyratex.com (Spake - Steve) Date: Wed, 21 Jan 1998 08:09:13 +0000
Hi all, Steve
From: "Bruce C. Anderson" (bcanders "at" northlink.com) Howdy Steve I race YSR 50s in Southern California, folks out here believe that as far as exhaust pipes are concerned, cleanliness is next to godliness. They are seriously fanatical about it. So, a number of methods have been suggested. they are as follows: Take it to a automotive machine shop and have it hot dipped. Fill and Flush numerous times with Muriatic (sp) acid Various methods using acetylene torches and lots of excess oxygen (use caution these methods produce lots of nasty smoke) Fill the pipe and let is sit for at least overnight with "Castrol Super Clean" Drain and recover the fluid for subsequent cleanings. I have yet to try any of these methods, and although I have access to each of them, I would recommend the Castrol first, for simplicity safety and convenience. The machine shop next. The muriatic acid method can be dangerous and environmentally unsound. The torch method would be my last choice. I don't think it would be as effective as the other methods and it will produce MASSIVE amounts of smoke along with open flame and the ensuing dangers.
Good luck
From: leigherwin "at" juno.com Date: Thu, 22 Jan 1998 09:49:11 -0600 The exhaust on my Cota was bowling ball heavy and the bike stumbled on top pretty badly so I plugged the stinger end, clamped the pipe (sans header) in the upright position and filled it with kerosene. After a few days (didn't miss much riding due to the rainy, muddy Memphis winter) I drained it, let it dry for a day and they used a propane torch to melt out the goo. Really messy & nasty, but colorful if you do it at night! The neighbors came over to see the show and the smoke wasn't a problem since it was dark.
