MOTOR MODS

Just a report here on my motor mods for the `95 thru `97 Sections.

My theory that - on the `96 at least - the power valve is essentially marketing BS, seems to have been valid. I can't say the same for the `95 or `97. I only know the `96 runs just as good, or better, with the thing run wide open all the time. If you have a `95 or a `96, good chances are your cable will corrode and freeze the power valve shut anyway (without you even knowing it). The `97 has a power valve cable vent to reduce the probability of this happening. If you remove the plastic cover off the case where the cable comes in on the primary cover, start and rev the motor. If the lever does not pivot a few degrees at high RPM, your cable is likely corroded stuck.

After comparison experiments, I pulled my cable fully out and secured it. Then I removed all the power valve guts and plugged the hole in the case. The bike is now quieter with no more power valve governor whine (all that remains is the water pump whine), and about 350g lighter to boot. Power is extreemely sweet and robust, and still strong off bottom.

As for timing changes. I strongly recommend that all Sections and Roos have their timing fully retarded (approx. -3 degrees, from about 24 degrees full advance, to 20 or 21). The results are: smoother bottom end with much less tendency to stall. Less rod snap feeling in low gear creeping. No more pinging. Insignificant reduction in wide open top end.

Procedure is to remove the flywheel, loosen the three phillips screws on the stator plate, rotate the stator plate clockwise as far as the slots allow, and retighten and replace the flywheel. I have posted other e-mails that get into this in detail.

Add the second flywheel weight to this and you'll get a motor as sweet as any. Especially on the `97, which becomes nothing short of incredible.
