I think Dale had two major points:
a) springs
1) lay the bike on its left side
2) remove the clutch cover
3) pull the clutch lever in and out and observe whather the plates disingage evenly
4) if they don't - swap the springs on the high and low sides.
The idea is that the springs must be of even length and tension. If the above does not work I would buy a new set of springs and check with the vendor that they are of equal length when bought.

b) master cylinder
1) check that the little spring inside is not collapsed or broken. Try stretching it as a temporary solution.
2) buy a repair kit (plunger/seals/spring) and fit it in place of the stocker, I have a feeling the 97 and later ones were better.
My '96 clutch master cylinder spring gave out after a year and a half, about the same time Bill Thomsons did. But Bills was a '95 so I guess he got an extra year.
