Subject: Favorite 2 Stroke Oil
This has probably been beaten to death several times, but I don't seem to
have any related postings saved in my archives: what are the preferences
for pre-mix oil?
We don't need to go into the optimum mix ratio (that *has* been beaten
to death). I'm just curious if there are any strong preferences, and why.
I just bought a new bike (99 COTA), so now's a good opportunity to pick
one thing and stick with it.

Got to be Elf. The Montesa, Beta, and Bultaco US teams all use Elf (maybe GasGas also? Stan? Mark?), Montesa factory team uses Elf. Now we are all sponsored by Elf but even if we were paying retail for the product it is what I would buy. 80/1 in the Montesa, clean burning, never fouls a plug, never runs hot, the bikes never have ring, piston or bearing problems. It is the hands down winner....go get some.

A full synthetic, racing two-stroke specific oil mixed with fresh gas of the
correct octane (slightly higher than the engines mean octane requirement) in
small batches just before intended use works best. Almost any of the major
brands are very good (Maxima, Elf, Honda Pro etc). My personal choice for
years now has been Rock Oil (Synthesis 2 Racing, out of England) but it's
not easily available in the States.
I'm sure you'll hear stories (like I have over many years) about "Whalll
heck, you don't need that expensive stuff, that's just an advertising
gimmick! I been using this here Weedeater Power Plus oil in my Yamaguchi for
years and it works GREAT! I can get it for thirty cents a quart if I buy it
in 55 gallon drums!" Some guys swear by something like Chevron outboard
oil, but I've seen their bikes run (crappy) and have pulled down and
inspected enough engines in forty years to know that oil DOES make a big
difference.

My Favorite is AMSOIL. Its formulated to mix 100:1 and most of the guys in
the club use it. Never seem to foul a plug, no smoke and have never had any
problems with it. Its also reasonably priced. And No I Don't SELL IT.
Also it mixes great with all type of gas (high or low octane)

Bill Thompson and I use Yamalube R (used to called 2R).
Bill uses 100:1, I use 80:1
When we do the nationals together we carry one can mixed at 100:1
I figure a few days a year at 100:1 isn't going to cause any problems :-)
Great oil, full synthetic, works just fine with zero problems.
Available all over North America at you favorite Yamaha shop!

Since 1986 I have used the same 2-stroke oil and to this date on my 85 TY
350. It has the same original piston/rings, the oil, Bel-Ray MC-5 50:1. I
have used it in all kinds of weather, from the 100's down to -40 degrees F.
I'm sold!

All in all, given our applications, it probably isn't THAT important within
the parameters you've given. I'm possibly a little more compulsive (me?
compulsive?) as to optimum performance because of my involvement in racing
for so many years and I'm always looking for that extra "edge". Buy a good
oil, mix it right and keep your bike in good tune- a lot of oils are good
and will give good performance.

I have a new Sherco and am running Elf at 80:1. I have used other oils
in other bikes, and this is the dryest of them all. Still a nice dark
color in the silencer, but not gooey or soggy.
Besides, the stuff smells trick.

I don't know much about oils, but one thing I do know is that you're
ahead to not use oils that smell. A while back I was using Maxima in the
old KRoo and thought it smelled neat too, kind of like the old Castrol
bean oil in my Super Rat and Elsinore days. Then one day we had an Alpine
meet near Ogden. I rode the loop up, and broke my glasses at the first
section (no I didn't crash, Stan, I was just trying to clean the dust off
them with the side of that tree) Anyway, on the way back down to the pits
to get my spares, about 2 miles, I realized I could smell that Maxima all
the way down, and then again all the way back up up again, only now it was
twice as bad. I was really stinking up the forest. Never used it again.
Gave me new insight in to way some people might consider them "stinky
smelly motorcycles".
