It's a fine machine for that purpose. He wants, however, to move on to a G-G. Anyway, this post is more about a mod I did. Being keen on retading the timing, I tried it on this bike also with, again, very good results. Simply pulled the mag cover off and rotated the stator plate as far as it would go in the three screw slots. The stator plate on the Aprillia in in the cover instead of behind the flywheel, so this is the easiest bike to do this on. If you face the flywheel, engine rotation is clockwise. Retarding timing is rotating the stator plate in the direction of rotation. Thus the stator plate must rotate counter clockwise if you pull the cover and face the inside of the cover. Less confusing is to simply remember to rotate it in the direction the motor spins. Results were the same as on the Fantics: smoother low end. The 280 Rotax in the Aprillia is a very powerful motor. Fully retarded, the thing still has mucho plenty on top, but is less jerky on bottom. The `98 Montesa has similar power to the Aprillia after the timing mods (I also enriched the pilot for more low end response), so I know this kind of power is appreciated by some current designers.
